Holiday Home Security
As previously discussed, theft and burglaries are expected to rise due to the economic downturn. Most house burglaries happen when a property is empty, and as holiday homes are only used for on average 30 weeks a year, they are particularly vulnerable.
To help ensure your second home is as you left it upon your return, follow the basic security tips below, which should hopefully deter all but the most determined burglars and opportunistic thieves.
- Lock side gates, sheds, outbuildings and don’t leave tools lying around which thieves can use to break into your home, such as forks or spades.
- Remember to lock all easily accessible windows and doors when your property is left empty, especially after holiday guests have departed.
- Consider marking valuable garden items with your postcode so they can be returned if recovered by the police, this mainly applies to UK holiday homes.
- If you have a ladder stored outside, make sure it is secured down with a padlock and chain.
- When moving into a new holiday home, change the locks on any doors as you don’t know who has had access to the existing keys, or even taken a copy.
- Keys should never be labelled with your address in case they get lost or stolen.
- Keys shouldn’t be left within easy reach of a door or window and don’t leave keys hidden under a doormat, plant pot or stone. Use a keysafe if necessary.
- Simple security measures such as using light timers could be enough to deter opportunists.
- Installing an alarm system can be a deterrent if someone will respond to the alert, however, consider its effectiveness if your property is remote and there is no-one around for miles. Fitting grilles and shutters may be more effective.
- It is a good idea to get a neighbour or housekeeper to check your home every few days to identify any signs of damage or suspicious activity.
The more difficult you make it, the less likely you are to be burgled or the victim of theft. Follow the simple security precautions above and make sure your second home insurance is protecting you from theft or attempted theft.
